Sustainability

At Morrish we believe that man must carefully consider his effect on the environment for the benefit of future generations. In the past some building and construction activities have had a negative effect on the environment but thankfully professionals such as ourselves now put environmental and sustainability issues at the forefront of our design considerations.

At Morrish we look at building techniques in a holistic way to try to minimise the impact of our designs on the environment. For example we are expert designers of timber structures but we only use softwood timber from properly managed and conserved forests. In this way our buildings are acting as carbon capturing devices throughout their lifetime and that must be good for the planet.

We have also developed expertise in energy saving technologies that reduce the energy a building will use during its working life. We actively promote the use of energy saving techniques such as ground heat pumps, wind turbines and solar power by incorporating these techniques into our own schemes.

It is widely considered that we have become a throwaway society, and this mindset even affects the construction industry. Many buildings are now in service for only relatively short periods of time; some city centre office blocks have had a useful life of as little as 20 years. We believe that where possible we should re-use buildings and to that end many clients ask our advice as to how they can alter existing structures to meet their current and future needs. Our extensive experience in the area of structural refurbishment can often produce both economic savings and environmental benefits over the apparently easier option of complete demolition and re-build.
